The History of Bingo in the US

Bingo is one of the most popular games there is in the US yet people still think of bingo as a game that is played by Brits. The history of US bingo is nearly as long as the history of the game in the UK.

At first bingo was a carnival attraction in America and was called Beano because the numbers called were covered on the cards using beans. It was Edwin S. Lowe who transformed the game of bingo from a carnival attraction into a huge segment of the entertainment industry. At first you had to have a licence to play, but it only cost $1 per year so was well within the reach of most people.

Modern Bingo in the US

Until the 1940s there were no cash prizes involved in US bingo, but it was soon realised that if it was played on Indian reservations, where gambling was allowed, cash prizes could be awarded. Eventually casinos realised that there was a lot of money to be made with bingo and began to offer cash bingo as well.

Today online bingo is very popular in the US where there are 1,000 bingo sites available.
